Club Outing
Outing Coordinator: Sheila Pyott
Date: February 24th, 2007 (Saturday), 8:30am, Mt. Bachelor Park N' Ride (Colorado Side).
Elevation Gain & Distance: 500'-1500' & ~5 miles. ~3 hrs. (round-trip from park-n-ride).
Outing Description: Destination to be determined by the group at the park-n-ride. Skin up or snowshoe up & ski, snowboard or snowshoe down. Only 20 minutes from Bend, any destination. Provides a great getaway opportunity to get a quick workout and build up your back country winter activity skills. The outing/climb generally takes 1.5 - 2 hrs. up/out & 1 hr. down/back. On a clear day there are excellent views of the Three Sisters, Broken Top & Mt. Bachelor from the top of Tumalo Mt.
This outing will focus on back country skiing and will spend time skiing the Tumalo bowl if conditions are appropriate & Tumalo Mt. was the outing location of choice. People may join on snowshoes, but must be prepared to wait for the skiers before the decent.
Equipment/Clothing needs: Be prepared for: snow, rain, hail, wind &/or sun. 10 essentials. Back Country skiers will need to have a snow shovel and avalanche transceiver and the knowledge to use them.
Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: Must be fit enough to climb up a moderate grade for 1.5 - 2hrs. Back country skiers should be solid intermediates who are comfortable in powder and crud conditions. Those on snow shoes should be comfortable climbing and descending in powder conditions.
