North Sister Over-nighter

Outing Coordinator:   Rod Jacobson

Date: June 2nd & 3rd, 2007 (Saturday & Sunday)

Start: Pole Creek Trail Head, Saturday @ 3:00 pm (car-pooling is encouraged)

Elevation Gain & Distance: 5000' & 15 miles

Directions: Drive west from Sisters on the McKenzie Highway (242) about one mile and turn left at the sign to Pole Creek Trail Head (15). Follow the paved road, then gravel road for 11 miles to the trail head. NW Trail Pass required.

Outing Description: We will hit the trail @ 3pm & hike up 1800'/5 miles to the S. side of the SE ridge (~6900'), where we will set up camp @ ~6:00pm. Sunday morning up @ 2am, eat breakfast, then hit the trail. The climb to the summit will be via the standard SE Ridge route and then through the Bowling Alley which will take us about 3200' feet above base camp in ~5 hrs.

After spending a relaxing/enjoyable 1/2 hr. on top, we'll head back down before the temperature rises above freezing, arriving back at camp @ ~11:30am. After hanging out at camp for an undetermined amount of time, we'll pack up and hike out, arriving back at the trailhead well before dark.

Equipment/Clothing needs: See the Sample Equipment & Apparel Checklists for multiday mountain climbing outings. For the North Sister attempt we'll be setting up a belay & fixed line, if necessary/possible, so we'll be bringing a rope (or 2). Participants will need a harness, two locking carabineers, a repel device, a ice axe, crampons and a helmet.

Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: You should be fit enough to carry a 35-50 pound pack 5 miles with a gain of up to 2000 feet and then climb another 3200' in crampons carrying a 20-25 pound pack the following day. You should have past mountaineering experience and feel comfortable with steep terrain, exposure and traveling on ice & rotten rock. You should have fundamental rock climbing skills. You must also have some backpacking experience, know how to set up your own tent (or share a tent) and know how to operate your own stove.

RSVP/Maximum Number of Participants: 8 total
