Mt. Rainier, Disappointment Cleaver

Start:   Early (1am) 6/21/07 carpool from Bend, OR (to be arranged)

Elevation Gain / (Loss):   About 9000' net gain from the trailhead to the 14,410' summit.

Distance / Grade:  Grade II—35 to 45-degree snow and ice slopes.

Directions to Start:  We will meet (6/21/07) (to be arranged) and carpool from Bend, OR to the Guide House across from Paradise Inn (by 8 am). We will start after registering at the Guide House (9 am).

Outing Description:    On 6/21/07 we will start at Paradise (5,4020 feet) and hike to Camp Muir (10,080 feet) (4-8 hour hike). On 6/22/07 will plan summit (14,410 feet) if weather permits and return to high camp. We will descend 6/23/07 or 6/24/07 and travel back to Bend, OR 6/23/07 or 6/24/07. Equipment & Clothing Needs:    Ten Essentials/Map & Compass/See attached list for other equipment. http://www.nps.gov/archive/mora/climb/climb.htm

Skills, Experience & Fitness Level Needed:    Must be in excellent state of health and fitness.  You will need basic crevasse rescue, self-arrest and snow/ice climbing skills.  I strongly suggest training for this climb.

The Mountain:    Mt. Rainer is the highest mountain in the Cascades Range, and certainly the premier glaciated peak in the lower 48.

Maximum Number of Participants & RSVP Requirements:   We need 4 to 8 people. You must RSVP prior to April 12, 2007 so reservations can be made.
