South Sister Hike/Snowshoe to summit

Start:   Meet at the bank next to Ray’s Food Store at 6:00 am. Climb starts at the trailhead across from Devil’s Lake.

Elevation Gain / (Loss):   4700’(?)

Time:   Full day (Eight hours or so)

Outing Description:    Hike up the snow covered trail to the summit of South Sister. This is suitable for anyone with good fitness level and stamina. Techniques for efficiently walking up steep snow will be demonstrated. Other subject matter to be covered includes use of an ice axe for walking in balance up steep snow, the “rest step”, practicing self arrest and having fun glissading (in control) down the slopes of South Sister!

Equipment & Clothing Needs:    Sturdy waterproof hiking boots (or plastic mountaineering boots), ice axe (can be rented at Mountain Supply), two or three quarts of water and food for the day, layers of non-cotton clothing, wind jacket, waterproof shell pants, hat, gloves and warm clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a pack big enough to carry it all. Snowshoes may be needed in the afternoon on the way down, bring them if you want. Collapsible ski poles are recommended, but not required

Skills, Experience & Fitness Level Needed:    No previous experience required but must be in above average physical condition with enough stamina to hike for eight hours or more.
