Tumalo Mountain Overnighter - Snow Camping

Outing Coordinator:  Dave Slavensky

Date: February 23rd & 24th, 2008 (Saturday and Sunday)

Elevation Gain: We will be climbing about 1300 feet. There is some great skiing on the other side of the mountain for those who want to ski it. You will need either skins for your skis or snowshoes as the snow is deep and the hill steep.

Distance/Grade: The hike is about 1.5 miles each direction. Don't know the grade, but it will make your lungs burn.

Meeting Location & Time: We will meet at Mt. Bachelor Park & Ride to carpool as there is limited parking at the Dutchman Flat snow park. You will need a snow park pass to prevent getting a ticket.

Directions to Start: The Mt. Bachelor Park & Ride is located on Simpson Avenue on the west side near Columbia Avenue. We will meet there at 8:00 am Saturday to car pool and then drive up to Dutchman Flat.

Outing Description: We will climb up to the top of Tumalo Mountain and down about 500 feet to a saddle on the other side where we will set up camp. This is an opportunity for those who have not winter camped to try it in a safe environment and for those experienced to brush up on your skills or help the newbies. For those skiers, you can make laps on the face and we can all watch you take a tumble or two.

Equipment & Clothing Needs: This is an overnight camp out - we can coordinate/share who has tents (or tarps), and stoves, but you will need all other gear such as sleeping bag, sleeping pad, warm clothes, skis or snowshoes, headlamp, food, water, 10 essentials, etc.

Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: Little experience needed, but you will need to be able to climb the 1300 feet with a pack, know how to snow shoe or ski and hopefully have some camping experience.

Maximum Number of Participants & RSVP Requirements: The ideal number would be 6 - 10 people, but if there more interested we can decide if we need to expand the group. Please contact myself to RSVP or ask questions.
