Middle Sister Climb - Hayden Glacier and North Ridge

Start: Pole Creek Trailhead, 5 AM

Elevation Gain/Loss: Start at 5,280’, Summit is 10,053’. Net gain is 4,773’.

Distance/Grade: Roundtrip is about 14 miles. Class 2 mostly, some Class 3.

Time: Round trip expected 10 to 12 hours, depending on conditions. An overnight camp can be included if the group desires.

Directions to Start: Pole Creek Trailhead is about 10 miles SW of Sisters on FS Rd. 1524. We will carpool from Bend as needed. Parking permit and sign-in at trailhead required.

Outing Description: This climb is to the lowest of the Three Sisters at the center of Three Sisters Wilderness Area. The route travels through the forest for a few miles, then over moraines above treeline. A mile or so traverse across the Hayden Glacier adds interest to the day, then the scramble from the saddle to the summit brings spectacular views and some fresh air.

Equipment & Clothing Needs: Bring the ten essentials, ice axe, crampons, water, lunch, and clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: Basic snow & glacier walking skills needed, and conditioning to gain & lose 10,000 ft. in one day, with daypack, and at some elevation.
