Mount Hood Summit Climb - South Side Route, Class 2

Date: June 1, 2008 (Sunday)

Start: Timberline Lodge parking lot by 1:00 am or so.

Elevation Gain/Loss: 5,300’.

Time: Round trip time approximately 9 to 12 hours.

Outing Description: The South Side Route is the shortest, least technical and therefore the most popular route to the summit. After a short night’s sleep in the parking lot at our cars, we will start walking by 1:00 am or so to avoid the crowds and get firmer snow and less rockfall. Refer to the book "Oregon High, A Climbers Guide" by Jeff Thomas for route details.

Equipment & Clothing Needs: Crampons and ice axe, helmet (optional). The 10 essentials (www.traditionalmountaineering.org), layers of non-cotton clothing, waterproof shell jacket and pants, headlamp, etc.

Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: Previous experience with use of crampons, ice axe and self arrest techniques.
