Outing Coordinator: Jim Wells
Date: June 14 & 15, OR June 21 & 22, 2008, to be determined by participant availability. If necessary, we can start and end a day earlier on either weekend.
Start: Bunny Flat Trailhead
Elevation Gain/Loss: Start at 7,000, Summit is 14,162, Net elevation gain is 7,162. Day 1 is 3,400 elevation gain, Day 2 is 3,762 elevation gain and 7,162 elevation loss.
Distance/Grade: Roundtrip is not many miles, but a whole lot of up and down. Class 2 mostly, some Class 3.
Time: Day 1 about 4 hrs climbing. Day 2 about 4-5 hrs ascent and 4-6 hrs descent.
Directions to Start: Bunny Flat Trailhead is 11 miles E of Shasta City on Everitt Highway. We will carpool from Bend.
Outing Description: This climb is to the southernmost of the Cascade Volcanoes and the highest peak between the central Sierras and Mount Rainier. We'll depart Bend early Saturday morning and drive to Bunny Flat, then hike up to camp overnight at or near Helen Lake at about 10,400. Early next morning we'll go up the Avalanche Gulch route if conditions permit. After a nice lunch and rest on the summit we'll descend to our camp, pack up, and retreat to the trailhead. Then we'll tank up in Shasta City and drive back to Bend.
Equipment & Clothing Needs: Bring the ten essentials, ice axe, crampons, water, overnight gear, and clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. Skills, Experience and Fitness Level Needed: Basic snow walking skills needed, and conditioning to gain & lose 10,000 ft. in one day, with pack, and at elevation.
Maximum Number of Participants & RSVP Requirements: Maximum group size is 6. RSVP by May 15 to Outing Coordinator.
