Jane & Tom Merrow
Who: Roger Fox, Tom Merrow and Jane Merrow
When: Left Bend at 5:30 a.m., Sunday, August 25th, arrived home about 12 hours later
Where: From the Pacific Crest Trail at Santiam Pass, to the summit of Three Fingered Jack and back
What: Ten hours of hiking, scree-scrambling, view admiring, rotten-rock traversing, and technical (5.1-5.4) rock climbing
How far: About 13 miles to and from trailhead
How high: Elevation gain of about 2920 ft from trailhead to summit (7841 ft)
GPS coordinates: 44'28.389 121'50.979 (Datum WGS 84) is where climber's trail leaves the PCT. It is 5.3 miles from the PCT trailhead to the cairn that marks the climber's trail.
Weather: Rain, thunder and lightening over the Sisters as we drove toward Santiam Pass, but except for a few clouds, the weather bypassed Three Fingered Jack. Rain and hail as we got home to Bend. We were lucky -- nice, cool hiking with reasonable visibility from the ridge and summit.
Would you do it again? You betcha! Love that exposure.
